DECATUR - An 18-year-old man facing charges that he raped a teenage girl while they were working at a vacation Bible school pleaded not guilty during his preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Edwin S. Bond Jr. was arrested Aug. 4 after a girl younger than 16 years old told police she was sexually assaulted the previous morning while helping with the school at First United Methodist Church, 201 W. North St.

At the hearing, Decatur police detective Jim Atkinson testified that the victim said she was raped at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 3 after Bond asked her to accompany him to an upstairs choir room.

After they entered the room, she lost sight of him.

When the victim went into a smaller room adjacent to the choir room to look for Bond, he closed the door that led back to the choir room, according to a sworn statement Atkinson wrote shortly after the incident. When the victim tried to open that door, she was unable to do so.

Bond then grabbed her by the arm, pulled her behind filing cabinets and forced her to the floor. The victim told police that Bond then raped her.

The victim said that Bond then told her, "You know you can't tell anyone."

Police officers investigating the incident found two drops of blood on the floor of the room where the victim said the rape occurred. The victim told police that was her blood, which was there as a result of the forced intercourse.

Bond is in the Macon County Jail on $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in circuit court Oct. 6 for a pretrial hearing.

At the time of his arrest, Bond was free on a $5,000 recognizance bond in connection with a previous charge of criminal sexual abuse. In that incident, for which Bond was arrested in June 2009, the victim was a 17-year-old girl. Bond is due in circuit court Monday for a status hearing in that case.
