Dozens of former students at Quebec school to get cash, apologies

A Quebec judge has approved an out-of-court settlement worth $1.15 million to former students of Bishop's College School who allegedly endured sexual abuse by a teacher more than 50 years ago.

Quebec Superior Court Judge Kevin Downs issued the ruling Thursday.

More than 40 former students are expected to share in the settlement. Lawyers estimate the alleged victims could receive $20,000 to $40,000 each, depending on how many submit claims.

The private boarding and day school in Lennoxville, Que., has also agreed to give individual apologies.

The abuse allegedly occurred between 1958 and 1962, when Bishop's was a boys' school. The former students said they were sexually and physically abused by Rev. Harold Forster, a former teacher and choirmaster.

Last month, there was some concern the deal could fall through after one of the former students asked Quebec Court Judge Kevin Downs to shelve the settlement proposal.

The man, who can only be identified by the initials M.E.R., said the alleged victims deserved more money for the abuse they endured.

The school, which is in Quebec's Eastern Townships region, was founded in 1836 and became co-educational in the 1970s.
