SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Catholic Diocese of Spokane must raise more than $800,000 this fall to pay sex abuse claims or risk having to sell some parishes to foreclosure.

The diocese lost a legal fight Tuesday in bankruptcy court that could have forestalled such a drastic step.

To prevent foreclosure, the diocese needs to deposit more than $43,000 into the bankruptcy trust by Sept. 30, followed by another $800,000 this fall.

The diocese settled nearly all the claims against it during a bankruptcy case that ended in May 2007. But the financial woes stem from filings by more than a dozen people since who contend they were abused decades ago.
