SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The pope is in England and he's making comments about the scandals surrounding the Catholic Church.

The pope has acknowledged in the past that the scandal came from sins within the church.

But now he's admitting the church had not acted decisively or quickly enough to remove priests who molested children.

We tried to speak with the local catholic bishop Timothy McDonnell but he was out of town.

We spoke with Mark Dumont who told 22news the pope reaching out is an important part of the healing process in the world.

Local residents say this admission was long overdue.

“It has taken a long time to answer a lot of important issues that surround the Catholic Church,” said Angel Rodriguez of Springfield.

The Pope now says the church's top priority is to help abuse victims heal.
