Statement by Joelle Casteix of Newport Beach CA, western regional director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (949 322 7434, jcasteix@gmail.com)

Here’s all you need to know about the new head of the Seattle archdiocese:

“Prosecutors say (Joliet) Catholic officials had some warning signs about (Fr. Alejandro) Flores. (Prosecutor Debra) Bree said Flores was caught with gay porn on his computer by Catholic officials in the spring of 2009. Though the website posted a disclaimer saying the people involved in the sex acts were not minors, Bree said Catholic officials were concerned some of the images appeared to be those of young boys.”

What did Sartain do? Ordain Flores anyway. What did Flores do? Molested a boy, as recently as January 2010. Last week, Flores pled guilty.

Notice the timing: Last spring, Flores was caught with what may have been child porn. Last summer, Sartain ordained Flores.

This is the most recent and glaring example of the continuing recklessness of Catholic bishops. In fact, it may be the most blatantly irresponsible and hurtful move we’ve seen by a bishop anywhere this year.
