The Pope has praised an organisation working to stamp out abuse of children by the Catholic church.

He met Bill Kilgallon, chair of the National Catholic Safeguarding Commission, at a care home in South London on Saturday.

At the private meeting the pontiff said he was "pleased" with the NCSC's "very important" work.

The Pope's vote of confidence in the independent body came after he issued his strongest apology yet for child abuse by the clergy, calling it an "unspeakable crime".

Mr Kilgallon said yesterday: "The Pope was particularly positive about the fact that the NCSC involve the statutory authorities – the police and social services – any time that there is an allegation of abuse within the church, whether it be by a lay person or a priest."
