"The archbishop is profoundly sorry over the acts reported to the police, which are a source of shame and humiliation," the statement said.

Spanish priest suspected of abuse removed pastoral duties and from his work San Vicente Martir Catholic University of Valencia Spain

A Catholic diocese in eastern Spain said on Tuesday one of its clergyman is suspected of abusing minors, the second such case to become public in Spain.

The office of the Archbishop of Valencia said in a statement the priest, who was not named, has been removed from all his pastoral duties and from his work at the San Vicente Martir Catholic University of Valencia.

Although the number of practising Catholics in Spain is waning, the Catholic Church remains influential in society and politics, with many supporters amongst the main opposition Popular Party (PP).

While the sexual abuse scandal has rocked the Catholic Church across the United States and many European countries, only one other case of sexual abuse of children by priests has come to light in Spain, also in the eastern part of the country.

During his visit to Britain, Pope Benedict made one of his strongest apologies to victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests.
