An Italian priest aged 75 years was sentenced Friday to two and a half years in prison for sexual violence committed in 2007 on a girl of seven years of his parish, located in the town Arese, near Milan (northern).

According to prosecutors, the priest drew the girl in his office on February 24, 2007 under the pretext of giving candy, taking advantage of it to sexually molest.

Prosecutor requested five years in prison for a long time priest who worked at an NGO in South America. The priest was suspended from priestly function at initiation.

Justice priest forbade contact with minors and ordered payment of damages to the victim.

“The court acknowledged the facts,” said father.

The judges accepted a request by the Prosecutor for the hearing of two other priests suspected of making false statements to cover their colleague.

Priest’s lawyer reiterated his client’s innocence. “I do not find this satisfactory way of administering justice,” said Marco Zanchetti.

The condemnation comes amid the Italian Episcopal Conference (IEC) announced on Friday that “the situation in Italy does not appear to need initiatives such as those adopted by other episcopal conferences.”

According to IEC, the last ten years, in Italy there were about a hundred canonical processes, and Italian bishops showed “rigor” to combat pedophilia.
