A 74-year-old priest has been charged at Mallow District Court in Co Cork, with three counts of gross indecency with a teenage boy.

Fr Brendan Wrixon, of the diocese of Cloyne in Co Cork, was arrested last Saturday.

Detective Garda Colman Murphy charged the priest with three counts of gross indecency with a teenage boy.

The first of these is alleged to have occured at the convent of Mercy in Mallow; the second at Ballintley near Doneraile, and the third at Christ the King Church at Shanballymore in North Cork.

All three charges relate to dates in the 1980s.

Fr Wrixon told Detective Garda Murphy he was shocked and stunned at the charges.

He was returned for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court next month.

Judge Olann Kelleher released the accused on bail in the meantime.
