BELLEVILLE A former Cayuga Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to molesting three altar boys will remain behind bars, court has been told.

Donald Grecco, 70, of St. Catharines appeared in Belleville court for a bail hearing Tuesday afternoon but he was not released.

Reports indicate Grecco couldn't find anyone to act as surety and vouch for him if he were to be released on bail.

Grecco pleaded guilty in Hamilton in March to sexually abusing three former altar boys between 1978 and 1986. Despite complaints to the diocese, he remained a priest for nearly two more decades.

He is due to be sentenced in a Hamilton court Oct 29.

Grecco was arrested last week for a breach of his residency requirements.

His arrest came a day after one of his former victims, Michael Blum, of Dunnville, announced he is launching a $3-million lawsuit against Grecco, former bishop James Wingle and the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Catharines for abuse and negligence. The civil suit hasn't been proven in court.
