Mr Dick says the sentence does not reflect the gravity of the offence and fails to act as a deterrent.

Queensland Attorney-General Cameron Dick has lodged an appeal against the prison sentence given to southern Queensland teacher Gerard Vincent Byrnes who was convicted of sexually assaulting students.

Earlier this month, Byrnes, 61, was jailed for 10 years for 44 offences committed against 13 students.

But given the time already served, he could be eligible for parole in six years.

Mr Dick says the sentence does not reflect the gravity of the offence and fails to act as a deterrent.

He also says the judge gave too much weight to "mitigating factors".
