Sue Cox thinks many more people might now come forward

A woman abused by a priest as a child is hopeful the conviction of paedophile priest James Robinson will encourage more victims to come forward.

Sue Cox, of Warwickshire, now works to help other sexual abuse victims speak out.

She spoke after Robinson, 73, was found guilty of 21 charges relating to offences against boys, all aged under 16, between 1959 and 1983.

Ms Cox said there was no doubt that there would be more victims.

"There is no doubt there are more, more, more children around, now adults, even elderly like me, who are now only just able to find their voice," she said.

"It is almost impossible to talk about.

"The shame and the guilt attached to this is really quite horrendous."

The embarrassment and the disgust that people who have been abused can feel means it can take many years for them to be able to speak, she said.

Ms Cox was abused 50 years ago. The order of the priest in question has paid her £25,000 in compensation.

The order - the Sacred Heart Fathers - took the view that it would rather pay then face litigation.

Robinson had worked in churches in Staffordshire, Birmingham and Coventry until the mid-1980s, when he moved to California.

He was convicted of the charges on Friday at Birmingham Crown Court.
