A La Crosse Catholic priest, accused of sexually assaulting a woman who'd sought help in dealing with her failing marriage, was acquitted at trial Tuesday after testifying the woman made sexual advances toward him.

Edmund Donkor-Baine, 48, of Ghana had been charged with misdemeanor assault in connection with an incident in the woman's car in August 2009. The 11-man, one-woman jury deliberated for four hours before delivering its verdict, according to the La Crosse Tribune.

The case is one of two that critics of Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki have pointed out that suggests Listecki did not aggressively pursue allegations of sex abuse against priests during his tenure in La Crosse. The second involved a priest now charged with child pornography, who continued in ministry after being accused of repeatedly following young boys into the restroom of a Wisconsin Dells water park.

La Crosse Bishop William Callahan was unavailable for comment, but the Diocese of La Crosse issued a statement saying the verdict was consistent to the judgment of the diocese that Donkor-Baine was innocent.

Listecki issued a statement saying, "We have processes in place in the Church and in the civil system to ensure that justice is done. It seems that was the case in this instance."
