DOVER, Del. (AP) ― An attorney for St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Parish says a defrocked priest accused of abusing children was "the embodiment of evil."

The News Journal reports that parish attorney Colleen D. Shields made the comments during opening statements Tuesday in the case of Francis DeLuca, who is being sued under the Delaware Child Victims Act of 2007.

Attorneys for John M. Vai, who is suing DeLuca and the parish, said that by inaction and looking the other way, parish officials aided DeLuca and that Vai and other young victims could have been spared from the abuse.

The Associated Press does not usually identify victims of sexual assault, but Vai and other alleged victims of DeLuca have spoken publicly about their abuse.
