This past weekend a Court in San Diego ordered the release of thousands of pages of “confidential” files maintained by the Diocese of San Diego. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/oct/26/release-files-called-landmark-abuse-case/. Dioceses around the country have always fought to keep this information from the public, even if it is produced in litigation. Can you imagine what the public would learn if all Dioceses around the country were truly interested in helping sexual abuse victims and voluntarily made this information public? Why won’t the two Dioceses in North Carolina lead the way in releasing these materials. When they do, we’ll know that their devotion truly is to “protecting God’s children” instead of protecting abusive priests.
