SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A man accused of severely beating a Jesuit priest who allegedly molested him and his brother more than 30 years ago has been charged with assault.

Amy Cornell, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara County district attorney, said Wednesday that William Lynch faces one count of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.

The 44-year-old is scheduled to enter a plea on Nov. 12. His attorney says he will plead not guilty.

Authorities allege Lynch beat the Rev. Jerold Lindner severely on May 10 after tracking him to his retirement home and confronting him in front of witnesses.

Lynch and his brother received a $625,000 settlement in 1998 after alleging sexual abuse on weekend camping trips in 1975.

Lindner, 65, has denied any wrongdoing and was never criminally charged.
