The Rev. Mark Gruber has dropped his defamation lawsuit against St. Vincent College in Latrobe.

According to the college, there was no settlement, and the superior of St. Vincent Archabbey is continuing his effort at the Vatican to have Father Gruber permanently removed from ministry.

Attorneys for the priest, who was dismissed from teaching and banned from ministry after pornography was found on his computer in 2009, did not return phone calls today. Previously, a former student had admitted downloading pornography on Father Gruber's computer, but said that Father Gruber couldn't reveal that because the student had made a sacramental confession about it to Father Gruber. Investigators for the state police had reported that the young man had information that only someone who had downloaded certain images on that computer would know.Archabbot Douglas Nowicki of St. Vincent Archabbey issued a statement today saying that the priest had dropped the suit because while under oath for a deposition "Father Gruber finally had to confront his egregious misconduct."

"It has now become apparent that Father Gruber has misled many people and has caused significant harm in our academic and religious communities. If you believe you have been a victim of his deception or misconduct, I urge you to contact me directy so that we can initiate inquiry, healing and reconciliation," Archabbot Nowicki said in the statement.
