A vicar who downloaded hundreds of child porn images has resigned after being found guilty.

Father-of-two Dominic Stone, 47, was convicted last week on 16 charges of making indecent photographs.

In a letter to parishioners of four churches where Stone was team vicar, the Bishop of Lichfield, the Rt Rev Jonathan Gledhill, wrote: "The downloading of indecent images of children is a very serious crime as it not only depicts but also encourages and feeds the abuse of children.

"I will still have to consider the question of barring Dominic from acting as a priest and this can only take place following the sentencing next month."

Stone was vicar for parishes around Marchington, near Uttoxeter, Staffs. He had been suspended from his post for the last 21 months.

Stafford crown court ordered married Stone, of Marchington, to register as a sex offender. He is on bail.
