The parishioners of St Theresa Child of Jesus Church have boycotted father Xavier D’Souza, who had brutally beaten Claytoyn Fernandes, 9, on Friday.

“Quite a few of us have stopped attending his mass. And every time we go to church, we will demand for some other priest to conduct the mass,” said Santan Denis Sequeira, joint secretary of The Parish Pastoral Council.

About 100 members of the council accompanied Claytoyn and his family for a meeting with bishop Agnello in Colaba on Monday. In the meeting, which went on from 12-3pm, the members demanded that Fr Xavier be transferred from the Airoli church. They were assured that a decision will be taken in three to four days.

“We were told that they will take time to look for a new priest. Our cardinal is out of the country till the month-end, so it may take some time to fulfil our demands. However, we will continue to boycott his mass,” added Sequeira.

The members also objected to the private tuitions that were being conducted on the church premises.

“This is not permitted. We have also complained to the bishop about the materialistic bend of the priest,” said Antony Francis, vice-president of the council.

While the boy is recovering from his injuries, the priest seems to be unaffected. “Father Xavier seems to be absolutely unperturbed with all these protests. He has still not shown any remorse or any willingness to apologise,” added Francis.
