DOVER, Del. (AP) ― The second-highest-ranking priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wilmington has denied on the witness stand that he covered up for a pedophile priest.

Monsignor Thomas Cini was questioned Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by a man who says he was abused by admitted pedophile Francis DeLuca.

The plaintiff's attorney, Stephen Neuberger, accused Cini of covering up for DeLuca in part because of fears that it might affect the church's collections. Neuberger also charged that Cini was "rewarded" with a series of promotions for his role in the cover-up.

Cini responded, "Not true. Not true and you know it." He said he didn't know that DeLuca was abusing children and that if he had, he would have stopped it. He said he wasn't part of any conspiracy.

Plaintiff Joseph Vai is expected to take the stand Friday.
