The Vatican announced Friday that its inquiry into sex abuse allegations against the Catholic Church in Ireland is now being launched, with results to be presented by May, 2011.

Pope Benedict XVI had announced the inquiry last March 19, with an apostolic visitation to travel to Ireland to investigate several dioceses, seminaries and orders.

The mission members will be trying to clarify why the sexual abuse took place, whether the measures taken against it had been effective and whether the church in Ireland had really begun its process of renewal after the revelations.

But the group will not be investigating any individual cases of paedophilia and will not be accepting any new complaints by victims.

The Catholic Church in Ireland was shaken by two separate investigation reports which documented how thousands of children had been sexually abused for decades, with the deeds covered up.

Benedict in a papal letter expressed 'the shame and regret which we all feel' about the revelations in Ireland.
