The Archdiocese of Detroit has a program that provides free counseling to victims of sexual abuse.

Victims may choose to seek counseling from therapists recommended by the church or seek someone on their own, said archdiocese spokesman Ned McGrath.

From 2004 to 2009, U.S. Catholic dioceses spent about $45 million on therapy for victims, according to reports compiled by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

"There's not a time restriction on it. If somebody goes to counseling for three years, and it's determined they need another year or two or three, I've never known us not to work with the person," said McGrath.

For help

Margaret Huggard is the victim assistance coordinator of the Detroit archdiocese. The victim assistance line is 866-343-8055. Victims can also write a confidential letter to the Rev. Michael Bugarin, Archbishop's Delegate, 1234 Washington Blvd., Detroit 48226.

Keep in mind, victims advocates suggest people call local law enforcement first.
