A Delaware judge presiding over several church sex abuse lawsuits has entered a verdict against former priest Francis DeLuca.

Judge James Vaughn Jr. entered the verdict Monday after attorneys for John Vai, who claims he was abused repeatedly by DeLuca in the 1960s at St. Elizabeth's parish in Wilmington, rested their case.

A jury still must decide on damages against DeLuca, who has not attended the trial and whose attorney withdrew from the case because he was not being paid by the Diocese of Wilmington. The jury also must decide Vai's negligence claim against St. Elizabeth's, which denies responsibility for DeLuca's actions.

Shortly after Vaughn entered his ruling, he learned his mother had died and the trial was put on hold.
