Tucson Bishop Kicanas

Tucson’s bishop is the top contender to the next president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

When Gerald Kicanas was ordained as a bishop in 1995 he became the Titular See of Bela, which is an ancient church in Bosnia that is no longer in existence, but every bishop needs a Church to lead, even if non-existent.

In 2001, Kicanas was appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of Tucson but still retained in Titular See until he became the Bishop of Tucson in 2003, succeeding Bishop Moreno, the former Titular Bishop of Tamagrista, the ancient church of Algeria, who had resigned due to a sex-abuse scandal of his priests that he worked to cover up.

Now a controversy is arising about whether Kicanas knew about sexual abuse while he was in Chicago. Unfortunately it seems as if every diocese in the world has sexual abuse problems with a priest.

I don’t understand why.

Abstinence is the way God created for Man, and God was actually a math nerd when he commanded Adam to go forth and multiply.

Top Catholic bishop denies knowing of abuse

A top contender to head the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops rejected allegations he allowed the ordination of a priest who went on to abuse children.

The bishops meet Tuesday to elect a new president, and the current vice-president, Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, Arizona, is considered a likely candidate.

But a group that campaigns against abuse of children by priests said Sunday he was not fit for the job.

“Kicanas knew about serious accusations of child sexual abuse and misconduct by a Chicago priest but ‘did little or nothing to report these allegations to police, warn parents about him, or protect children from him,”" the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) said.

“At the time, Kicanas headed the seminary where (Daniel) McCormack attended and could have blocked or delayed the priest’s ordination but did not. That cleric was convicted in 2007 of molesting kids and is now behind bars,” SNAP said.
