What we witnessed today with the election of Archbishop Timothy J. Dolan to the presidency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is the triumph of his public relations skills. The Bishops in half measure hopefully listening to the cries of the abused defeated Bishop Kicanas but chose to accept Archbishop Dolan’s record on clerical sexual abuse. This is the polar opposite of the loving trait of Jesus of Nazareth.

The Bishops have tin ears when it comes to the cry of the abused.

Here is just another instance of when the Bishops get an opportunity to follow Pope Benedict’s charge to “do everything possible” to end the greatest crisis in the Church in 500 years they revert to their duck and dodge posture insteads of clear leadership rejecting those who have bad records on abuse.

Now Archbishop Dolan has a broader pulpit both here and in Ireland where he leads the Vatican’s seminary visitation. We can only hope that his tin ear will be healed before it progresses to total deafness to the detriment of the whole Church.

He can begin with

* a loud cry for the reform of statutes of limitations

* an end of the blocking of access to justice for the victims

* the elevation of the protection of children over the protection of the clergy and genuine seeking out of all the abused in an atmosphere generously laden with the attributes of Jesus of Nazareth.
