The bishop of Steubenville has been named the chairman of the American Catholic church’s committee to protect children.

The Reverend Daniel Conlon was elected chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People Tuesday at the U.S. Conference of Bishops’ meeting in Baltimore.

Conlon grew up in Cincinnati, and was ordained in 1977. He pastured churches in Cincinnati until Pope John Paul II named him the fourth Bishop of Steubenville in 2002.

He’s been a member of the child protection committee and earlier this year, he called sex abuse by priests – quote – “ a terrible crime as well as a sin for which there is no excuse.” He also said the church has made great strides to stop the abuse.

But his appointment to chair the committee has its critics, including Judy Jones, a Steubenville native and Midwest associate director for the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests.
