Boston Archbishop Sean O’Malley met with victims of abuse in Dublin Tuesday. It was part of his assignment from Pope Benedict XVI to investigate the Irish church’s response to its massive clergy sex abuse crisis.

Maeve Lewis is one of the abuse victims who met with the cardinal. She says she came away with the impression that O’Malley “genuinely” wanted to understand the problem and make a difference.

“I would like the church to finally accept that there is a grave institutional issue in terms of the way sex-abusing priests have been handled,” Lewis says.

The Vatican plans to issue a summary of findings after the investigation is complete.

Lewis spoke with WBUR’s Deborah Becker on Tuesday’s Morning Edition, by phone from Dublin, to talk about that meeting.
