22.11.2010 - An archbishop has described his dismay and shame at reports that 19 Luxembourg priests abused children and young people.

In an open letter read in churches in the Grand Duchy on Sunday, Archbishop Fernand Franck extended his sympathies to the victims.

He wrote : "We are shocked by the accusations and allegations that came to light. It is with deep regret and concern that we ask ourselves how this could happen. How is it possible?...Beyond the physical and psychological damage done to these victims, their trust and dignity were deeply abused. These are wounds that heal in life. Although we cannot undo what happened, we feel deep dismay and shame. We empathise with the victims and share their grief."

The leader called for the accused, who were priests, nuns and some lay church members, to apologise.

He also appealed for measures to be taken to prevent a repeat, suggesting more stringent checks on recruiting priesthood candidates and rigourous training.

The 19 Luxembourg priests were among 35 religious community members accused of sexual abuse. Among them are a former Diekirch Sacristan, who was charged with offences against at least six female acolytes.

He was given a deferred one-year prison sentence.
