Kenneth Storheim

A high ranking clergyman turned himself into Winnipeg police Wednesday, to face charges in decades-old alleged sexual assaults.

64 year old Kenneth William Storheim, who is known as Archbishop Seraphim in the Russian Orthodox Church, surrendered himself to police in Winnipeg. Officers say he was arrested on the strength of a warrant and charged with two counts of sexual assault.

The Orthodox Church of America posted a message on it's website last month noting that Storheim had taken a leave of absence pending a review of "sexual misconduct allegations."

Storheim was most recently working in Ottawa but was a priest at Winnipeg's north end Holy Trinity Sobor Russian Orthodox church in the 1980's He's accused of molesting young boys.

Winnipeg police say due to a publication ban on the case, they would not release any more details. When the case first became public last month, officers noted the difficulty in investigating such old allegations.

"Physical evidence is no longer a factor, memories fade: 25 years is a hugely long time, we may have witnesses who are no longer alive," said Cst Rob Carver.

Storheim was released on a cash surety to appear in court at a later date. Police are asking anyone who could assist in the investigation to call the Sex Crimes Unit at 986 6245.
