A Dutch newspaper has brought to light a case of sexual abuse decades ago by a Catholic priest who later became a prominent conservative bishop.

A church spokesman says its own internal investigation arm concluded "with great probability" that Jan ter Schure, who died in 2003, was one of seven priests who abused the victim from 1948 to 1953. Ter Schure later became bishop of Den Bosch.

The case was made public by newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

Church spokesman Pieter Kohnen said Friday the victim, now 76, received a financial settlement of ˆ16,000 in 2003.

After abuse scandals in other countries, a church-appointed panel in the Netherlands is investigating Dutch cases. It is looking at more than 1,000 complaints stretching back decades.
