  Rome: Launch of Campaign to Stop Sexual Violence against Children

Rome, 29 November 2010 - Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio has launched today in Rome, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, the Council of Europe campaign to stop sexual violence against children.

"Prevention, prosecution, protection"- Maud de Boer-Buquicchio thus summed up the Council of Europe action. "The Council of Europe action aims at eliminating risks to children from all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse", she stressed.

The initiative was co-organised with the Italian Ministry for Equal Opportunities, in the historic "Complesso Monumentale di San Michele a Ripa Grande". "It is a sign of great importance for Italy to be the first country to host the campaign", highlighted Mara Carfagna, Italian Minister for Equal Opportunities. "We are confident that the process of the Lanzarote Convention will achieve important results in the fight to eradicate sexual violence against children", she added.

Selma Aliye Kavaf, Minister for Family and Women, representing the Turkish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, and Frank Fahey, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly have also participated in the event.
