A New Zealand jury has retired to consider the fate of a former Catholic Marist brother, now living in Australia, who is charged with sexually assaulting two pupils more than 30 years ago.

Bede Thomas Hampton, 62, has denied doing most of what is alleged against him.

Last week he told a jury in the High Court at Wellington that for years he had carried the burden of what he had done wrong -- but some of the claims made were impossible and ridiculous.

The jury retired on Monday afternoon to consider its verdicts on 23 charges, including two counts of sodomy and various charges of indecency.

Hampton, who is now married with children and living in Australia, pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault involving one boy. Another charge was dismissed on Monday.

The allegations relate to his time at Wellington's St Joseph's College in the 1970s.
