LA CROSSE, Wis. (WTAQ) - The La Crosse Catholic Diocese says it has no evidence that a priest who died Tuesday did anything illegal, despite facing child pornography charges.

And the church hoped people will be, “merciful in their judgments” about The Reverend Patrick Umberger. The 60-year-old Umberger died at an assisted living center in La Crosse from cancer.

He was awaiting a trial after pleading innocent to a felony charge of possessing child porn. Umberger was charged in July after state Justice agents found 3 graphic images of nearly-nude children on his computer.

That was about a year after his season pass was revoked at a Wisconsin Dells water park, where was he caught following several young boys into a restroom at a children’s swimming pool.

Umberger resigned this summer as the pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Onalaska. He also served as a teacher and chaplain at a La Crosse Catholic middle school.
