Queensland child safety campaigner Hetty Johnston.

CHILD safety campaigner Hetty Johnston has blasted the Catholic Church after it rehired the principal who was sacked over a child sex abuse scandal at his Toowoomba Catholic primary school.

The man, who can't be identified to protect the identities of the abused children, has been employed as a supply teacher at a Catholic primary school in the Ipswich area.

Mrs Johnston said the Catholic Church had let themselves down with the re-employment of this man.

“I think his own actions or his inactions demonstrate this man is not a person that children can rely upon,” Mrs Johnston said.

“It's critically important that the people who work with our children are the people who will defend the rights of our children as a priority each and every time.

“This is certainly not a person that I'd want teaching my children.”

Mrs Johnston urged anyone affected by child abuse to phone Bravehearts on 1800 272 831
