A Houston-area priest was arrested and charged with public lewdness Wednesday after police said he exposed himself in an adult book store.

Father Alberto Maullon Jr. has been the pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Nassau Bay since 2002. He was arrested at a store in the 10100 block of the Gulf Freeway.

"Once the suspect and the undercover officer moved to a viewing room, a brief conversation took place that was sexual in nature leading to the suspect exposing himself to the officer," the undercover officer said.

Maullon, 52, was out on $1,000 bond Friday.

"I see him at church all the time, also go to the same gym as he does, see him at the gym all the time, I find that very hard to believe, believe me," said a church member who did not want to be identified.

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston issued a statement about Maullon’s arrest, saying they were deeply saddened by the incident.

The Diocese said Maullon expressed deep sorrow for any pain or hurt he might have caused, and has been granted a leave of absence from his ministerial duties.

"I ask you to join me in praying for St. Paul Parish and for Father Maullon as he addresses these very personal challenges with his priesthood," Daniel Cardinal DiNardo said. "May the healing power of God be with all those impacted by this news."
