SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Catholic Diocese of San Angelo, which encompasses 29 counties, completed an audit of its Safe Environment Programs and was found to be in compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

The charter was established in November 2002 by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops to ensure dioceses across the country establish safe environment programs to protect children and youth from sexual abuse.

The Gavin Group of Boston, an independent firm commissioned by the bishops’ organization, conducted the annual audit on the San Angelo diocese in August. The audit looked at diocesan Safe Environment policies, the Safe Environment Programs for church personnel, parents and children, as well as procedures for assisting victims of abuse.
