  Ex-Priest to Be Sentenced for Abuse

A former priest has been jailed for 16 years for 17 counts of indecently assaulting three altar boys in the 1970s and 1980s.

Tony Walsh (56) of Bunratty Road, Coolock, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court last week to two counts of indecently assaulting a boy in a west Dublin church between November 1978 and April 1979.

He pleaded guilty to a further charge of indecently assaulting a boy in a west Dublin school between January 1984 and December 1985. Walsh was ministering as a priest in Ballyfermot during the period.

He was convicted by a jury last month on separate charges of buggering and sexually abusing a third boy between 1979 and 1983. Walsh was found guilty on five charges of buggery and eight of indecent assault.

He originally faced 16 charges, six of buggery and 10 of indecent assault, referring to incidents between June 1st, 1979, and June 30th, 1983.

Judge Frank O'Donnell today sentenced Walsh to 16 years in prison, with four suspended for. He ordered that Walsh be placed on probation for two years after his release and ordered him to enter a bond to be on good behaviour for five years on a surety of €200,

He was also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life

Judge O'Donnell refused leave to appeal. However, he allowed a certificate of appeal.

Walsh, who was part of the was part of the All Priests Show, served a six-year sentence in the 1990s for abusing six boys.
