A total of 218 charges of child exploitation, sometimes involving victims as young as four years old, have been laid against 57 men, including 25 Canadians, the Toronto Police Service said Wednesday.

Det. Paul Krawczyk of the force's sex crimes unit told a news conference the charges were laid worldwide.

"That's important to note -- it's boys and girls, of all ages. In this case, we believe the youngest to be four," he said.

In November 2009 -- in partnership with U.S., Canadian and international police services -- officers from the Toronto's sex crimes unit launched an international investigation into online trading of child sexual abuse images and videos.

Krawczyk said the number of images is in "the hundreds of thousands, if not millions."

Police infiltrated the ring after the arrest of an Anglican priest, Robin Barrett, 51, of Conception Bay South, N.L. He has since been convicted of possession and distribution of child pornography.

"It was information gathered during the arrest and after that arrest that allowed us to infiltrate this network," he said.

Undercover officers investigated into the 57 men who were allegedly trading images and videos and, in some cases, creating images by allegedly abusing children, police said.

The arrests were made as far back as November 2009 and as recently as this month.

In the United States, 26 men face 56 charges; in Canada, 25 men face 131 charges; and in Europe, six men face 31 charges, police say.

Among those charged were 10 from Ontario, three from British Columbia, two Albertans, two from Saskatchewan and one from Newfoundland and Labrador. Details of others who were charged were not revealed to protect the identities of the victims, police said.

The men charged come from every walk of life. Among them Randy Miller, 40, a balloon artist from Napanee, Ont., who went by the stage name, Honker the Clown.

As well, there was Richard Dyde, 47, of Toronto, a researcher who appeared on national television to talk about his specialty, zero gravity of astronauts in space, and Daniel Clayton, 29, of Calgary, a former British Special Forces soldier who recently operated a Calgary company consulting on security issues. Also charged is David Caza, 47, of Kamloops, B.C., who was run out of Merritt, B.C., in 2005 after residents learned the convicted child predator was living in their town.

In addition to facing charges of possession and distribution of child pornography, he is charged with breach of recognizance.

In total, 25 children have been rescued: 12 in Canada; 10 in the United States; and three in Europe, police said.

Of the 12 children rescued in Canada, police would say only that four were from the "Ottawa Regional Area" and the remainder were from B.C.

And because the images are still available on the Internet, the children continue to be exploited every day, Krawczyk said.
