A furious Vatican refused to reply to requests from the Murphy Commission about complaints relating to clerical child sex abuse here.

Relations between the Vatican and Ireland deteriorated sharply as a result, according to the latest US diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks.

One cable from earlier this year says the Vatican became angry at the way the Murphy Commission sidestepped normal diplomatic channels and directly sought a meeting with the Vatican's representative in Ireland.

Dated February 26, the US cable was written by US diplomat in Rome Julieta Noyes.

"The Vatican believes the Irish Government failed to respect and protect Vatican sovereignty during the investigations," the charge d'affaires at the US Embassy to the Holy See, wrote.

It added: "Much of the Irish public views the Vatican protests as pettily procedural and failing to confront the real issue of horrific abuse and cover-up by Church officials."
