Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 862 7688 home, 314 503 0003 cell, SNAPdorris@gmail.com)

Ever wonder why more victims of child sex crimes don’t call law enforcement? This is one reason: because our justice system often gives interminable delays to alleged criminals, especially in child molestation cases.

It’s sad that a serial predator is allowed to exploit every possible delay while his deeply wounded victims patiently wait for their chance to expose his wrongdoing, and the wrongdoing of Howard’s Catholic supervisors, in court.

We hope every single person who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes in the Boonville area – especially those with information about Howard – will find the courage to speak up and the wisdom to seek independent help from therapists, support groups and law enforcement, not church officials.

When victims, witnesses and whistleblowers stay silent, kids remain at risk. But when victims, witnesses and whistleblowers come forward, at least there’s a chance for prevention, justice, healing and truth-telling.

And we hope that Howard’s continued delays backfire. We hope his legal maneuvers will prod others he hurt into making the brave, morally responsible choice of coming forward.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 22 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. For the fifth time in the last six months, this morning a hearing was set to be rescheduled on the charges against former?Boonville priest Gerald Howard in the 18th Circuit Court for Cooper County.

Prosecutor Doug Abele said the defense is still in the discovery stage of the trial and collecting depositions from people all over the country. He expected the next hearing to be scheduled for late February.

Howard, who once worked at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, faces charges on suspicion of three counts of forcible sodomy, three counts of attempted forcible sodomy and two counts of kidnapping.
