A California man contends in a lawsuit filed in Louisville that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) should be held accountable for not protecting children of missionaries from sexual abuse.

Lawyers for Sean Coppedge say he is seeking damages for emotional distress, lost wages, counseling costs and other injuries in the lawsuit filed Monday in Jefferson Circuit Court.

The church issued a report in October documenting sexual or physical abuse involving its overseas missions between 1950 and 1990. Most of the victims were identified as children of missionaries in Africa and Asia.

The Courier-Journal reports that Coppedge said he was sexually assaulted by an older juvenile at a Congo mission boarding house in 1988 and told by the senior Presbyterian employee at the boarding house to stay quiet about it.

Presbyterian officials did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment Monday.
