Judge says he is at a loss to understand how Wilfred Edwin Dennis was reinstated

A judge says he cannot understand why the Anglican Church reinstated a paedophile priest after he was convicted in the 1970s.

Wilfred Edwin Dennis, 75, is awaiting sentencing on his third set of child sex offences, and is currently serving a jail term that would have been due for parole in April next year.

Dennis was first convicted in the 1970s for indecently assaulting altar boys, but was reinstated by the church.

Dennis's lawyer says those were different times.

But District Court Judge Paul Rice says he is perplexed as to how Dennis was in a position to commit offences against more boys.

Dennis will be sentenced in February.
