The Vatican has named a Catholic priest from the Wichita diocese to replace the bishop of Dodge City, who has announced plans to retire early.

Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday announced that Rev. John B. Brungardt will become bishop of Dodge City, replacing Bishop Ronald Gilmore. The pope allowed Gilmore to retire at age 68 under church law that lets bishops retire early if they're sick or some other reason makes them unsuited for office. Normal retirement age for bishops is 75.

The Dodge City Diocese did not answer phone calls Wednesday, but Gilmore said in a statement on the western Kansas diocese website that he considered being a bishop a "burden."

Brungardt has most recently been pastor of St. Mark parish west of Wichita.
