A former Marist brother who has been jailed for historic sex offences against two former pupils had his offer of reparation rejected

The sister of one of the victims of a former Marist brother's indecent assaults says his expressions of remorse are hard to swallow.

Bede Hampton has been sentenced to two years six months in prison for historic sex offences against two boys while he was a teacher at St Joseph's College in Masterton in the early 1970s. The 62-year-old was given a discount because his right to trial without delay was breached.

The sister says an offer of reparation of $10,000 from Hampton was rejected because it was an insult rather than a comfort. "It's not about money," she said, "it's about Bede being responsible for what he's done and making sure that other children don't get put into that position."

She says her brother couldn't bring himself to come to court today and is encouraging other victims of historic abuse, particularly within the church to come forward.
