St Bernard's Church, Eureka: McCabe's former parish in California

Patrick Joseph McCabe, a former Catholic priest and pedophile has been denied bail by a San Francisco federal judge. McCabe is awaiting extradition to Ireland on six counts of abuse while there are also mounting legal actions being taken over his abuse of schoolboys in his former Santa Rosa parish.

McCabe, now aged 74, was arrested in California this year. He has been accused of abusing six boys in Ireland from 1973 to 1981. Now other American men have come forward claiming they were also abused by McCabe when he worked in their California parish.

According California's Court House News Service McCabe has made six requests for bail. The court has said that he is "flatly mistaken in his interpretation of the law". However, McCabe argues that he deserves bail due to his bad health and because if he were in Ireland he would be given bail. He also claimed that the charges against him have been delayed.

U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag responded to his latest request by writing that he was not entitled to it because he is a predator and a flight risk with no ties to the community.

Haag wrote "McCabe abused his position of trust and authority to serially sexually molest young boys to fulfill his own admitted fetish…The fact that the majority of these children apparently delayed coming forward to authorities to report their victimization should be fully expected; it should not, perversely, then be used by their molester as a basis for freedom."
