(KMOV)-- The search is on for a former Berkeley police officer, now formally charged with sexually abusing a young girl.

Dan Peterson was let go from the department after an investigation revealed evidence of the abuse against a 15-year-old.

He is now charged with one count of rape, four counts of sodomy, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Peterson was booked and let go while prosecutors built their case.

Chief Tom Jackson of the Ferguson Police Department says officials have been going to places Peterson was known to frequent, approaching his family members, and asking others if they have heard from him, and hoping they advise Peterson to turn himself into police.

Investigators say Peterson met the victim through a youth group at Risen Lord Community Church in St. Charles.

No other victims have come forward.

Police say the alleged abuse of the girl happened within a two-month period over the summer, while Peterson was staying at his parents' Ferguson home.

Chief Jackson says it is just a matter of time before they bring him in, and a grand jury hears the case.
