The lawyer of the once New York-based Croatian priest suspected of having misused Croatian Catholic Mission's money has sent a letter to the daily Vecernji List in which he accuses the newspaper of publishing unconfirmed information.

Paper has written that Don Robert Zubovic has given 50,000 dollars of the Community's money to his friend Nada Bernic for financing the rental of her restaurant in Manhattan. Both have claimed that the money had been returned.

In his letter, Zubovic's attorney Davor Pliso writes:

"It is not true that my client, Robert Zubovic, did not deposit the money that he received from Nada Bernic onto the account of the Croatian Community in Astoria and the Croatian Catholic Mission.

As he told Mr. Zvonimir Despot (journalist with the paper that first published the story), he has the proof that the money in question has been deposited in its entirety to the relevant accounts. He has informed Mr. Despot that he could show these papers to him in person, but not send them via electronic mail or fax.

"This was obviously not important to Mr. Despot considering that the aforementioned article had already been published although it contains unconfirmed information.

In the article it is also said that don Zubovic – a respected and beloved priest in his community of the Blessed Ivan Merz in Astoria – has had a business relationship with Nada Bernic."

This is not correct, the letter continues, and this information is used to undermine Zubovic's spiritual work and his efforts as a priest.
