A Bishop Stang High School teacher investigated for inappropriate sexual conduct with a student in 1994 has been cleared after the district attorney’s office found insufficient evidence and that a statute of limitations had expired.

The teacher, Jean Revil, had been put on administrative leave in October after Catholic Social Services received a report of allegations by a female student, who claimed sexual misconduct at the school. Revil, who has been at the school for more than three decades, will return to her position at an undetermined date, said the Diocese of Fall River, which oversees the Catholic school.

“We are grateful for the patience by all involved while this difficult matter was handled,” the diocese said in a statement on Thursday. “We realize how trying these past months must have been, particularly for Ms. Revil.”

“While these cases are never easy, it is important that each be thoroughly investigated by the appropriate legal authorities to ensure the safety of all children and young people,” the diocese said.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said it found “insufficient evidence” for proceeding with charges, and that any charges would have violated a statute of limitations anyway. Revil, a teacher and director of the school’s campus ministry program, denied the charges, the diocese said.
