A VICTIM of childhood abuse discovered one of his alleged attackers was alive - nine years after police told him she was dead.

Terence Daley, 64, responded to a police appeal for victims of historical abuse to come forward in 2001.

Detectives told him that no action could be taken as all the men and women he identified were dead.

But last year Terence, of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, learned that one of his alleged attackers - an 85-year-old nun - was still alive.

But he was shocked when he contacted police again and was told that the woman was now too old and infirm to be questioned.

He revealed: "I feel extremely aggrieved. When I was told everyone I'd accused of abusing me was dead, I believed the police.

"To discover that one was still alive - but nine years on she was now too old and infirm at 85 to be interviewed - was galling to say the least."

Terence claims he suffered six years of physical and sexual abuse at Pontville School in Ormskirk, Lancashire, which was then run by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Terence was sent to the school at the age of 10 for playing truant and alleges that two male teachers sexually abused him there.

The grandfather-of-three also alleges years of physical suffering at the hands of several nuns including the 85-year-old woman.

The school is now run privately and has no link to the order of nuns.

His lawyer has uncovered notes which suggest that police investigating the historical claims of abuse said some victims were motivated by compensation.

Papers from lawyers acting for the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary revealed that Sister Julie Rose, a represenative of the order, was told by police that some of those who came forward with accusations "seem to be after money".

Terence's legal executive Peter Howard said: "When I read what the officer had apparently said I was astonished.

"Mr Daley's complaint was a very serious one yet it appears to have been treated in a rather preordained manner and somewhat flippantly.

"We've now lodged a formal complaint with Lancashire Constabulary."

Terence, who is now living in Runcorn, Cheshire, said: "When I saw the nun's notes detailing what the police officer had apparently said to her I felt betrayed. At no time had I mentioned compensation.

"I made a complaint about what happened to me as a child in good faith. Lancashire Constabulary were the ones who made public appeals asking for abuse victims to come forward. When I did, I was treated appallingly."

Sister Julie Rose said: "Of course we take allegations like these very seriously. I remember a conversation with the police officer who said he felt that Mr Daley had come forward because of what had been happening in Ireland."

Lancashire Police said: "Mr Daley has made a complaint and it will be investigated thoroughly."

The Lancashire force has been criticised for the way some abuse cases have been investigated.

A bbc documentary on Britain's most-wanted paedophiles told of Alexander Dalgleish, 37, who had unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl then fled to Ireland.

Lancashire Police did nothing for 48 days but Dalgleish was later jailed for the abuse.
