A decision by the Catholic Diocese of Burlington to sell its sprawling 30-acre headquarters property was finalized on Friday. Burlington College President Jane Sanders confirmed the College is now set to take over the property that includes hundreds of feet of lake Champlain waterfront.

Sanders on Sunday said details of the sale will be released as soon as this week. According to a classified ad in the newspaper, Burlington College obtained seven million dollars of federally-backed bonding. Signs that the purchase was about to happen -- a statue of the Virgin Mary is gone from the roof of the old Diocese headquarters -- as well as a cross near the front entrance.

Before the sale could happen, some issues had to be resolved. Last week, the Committee on Temporary Shelter closed on its purchase of Burlington College's former property in the old Colodny building. The Howard Center also needed to find a home for residents living in leased space on the Diocese property.

With those issues apparently resolved, a formal announcement on the deal is expected this week.
